Our philosophy
Why we spend the morning on blocks and water and paint instead of worksheets, and what that does for a four-year-old.
WCPC Preschool recognizes the crucial importance of a child’s experiences during early childhood. Positive and supportive relationships during these early years are essential for healthy emotional development.
Our warm and nurturing teachers create an environment with a strong focus on the development of social skills and self-esteem. We believe that all areas of a child’s development are interrelated and equal in importance — and that play is the best vehicle for discovery and growth.
The whole child
All five, all the time.
Fine and gross motor, indoors and out, most of it disguised as play.
Sharing, waiting, and joining a game already in progress, which is harder than it sounds.
Confidence, and the vocabulary to say what is wrong instead of hitting someone.
Early literacy, numbers and thinking, woven into whatever the week’s theme is.
Kindness, gratitude and wonder, in the warmth of a church community.
Our curriculum
As children experience early academic and social success, it paves the way for later success in kindergarten. We focus on the building blocks of school readiness — academics, social expression, self-care, and motor skills.
Our curriculum is balanced to include both teacher-directed learning and child-initiated activities. We strive to provide stimulating materials conducive to exploring, experimenting, and decision-making.
Kindergarten readiness
Kindergarten teachers care less about letters than parents expect. What they notice is whether a child can follow three instructions in a row, ask an adult for help, and manage their own coat.
Letters, sounds, writing their name, loving stories.
Counting, patterns, sorting, working a problem out.
Following directions, sitting through a lesson, taking turns.
Belongings, bathroom, asking for help.
Friendship, sharing, using words instead of hands.
Scissors, crayons, and the grip that makes writing click. It arrives suddenly.
“[A parent’s words on how prepared their child was for kindergarten — the confidence they walked in with, or what their kindergarten teacher noticed. Replace with a real quote.]”
“Our goal is to foster a love of learning that will last a lifetime.”
— The WCPC Preschool philosophy
From the director
Choosing where to leave your child for the first time is a hard, slightly emotional decision, and most parents are more nervous than they let on at the door. That is fine. We have seen it a thousand times and it has never once been a problem.
Come and look around. Meet the teachers, watch a circle time, ask the question you are embarrassed to ask.
Part of the WCPC family
We share a campus with the church, which is how we can offer a gated lot and a lot of room.
Families of every background and belief enroll here and always have.
Half an hour on a weekday morning, while the children are here.
